What is bandwidth / data transfer?

Data transfer (or bandwidth as it is commonly, but incorrectly known) is basically the amount of data or information transferred through your hosting account on our servers.

If for example you have a page on your website that takes up 1Mb of disk space and 10 people view it, you would then have transferred 10Mb of data through your account. Uploading large, high resolution pictures for example will mean that each person who views your website will then be transferring more data than before due to the pictures being sent each time to visitors.

The same goes for e-mail and FTP transfers - if 5 people e-mail you a 1Mb attachment then you would have transferred another 5Mb of data through your account. An upload of 30Mb of files to your webspace would also be counted against your monthly data transfer amount.

We log all data that is transferred in conjunction with your account as this is one of the key expenses in providing you with a hosting account on the Internet. You can monitor your data transfer usage for your hosting account in real-time from within your site administrator control panel. As your account reaches its allocated quota, the server will e-mail you starting from 80% of your account limit being reached. In the event of you exceeding your allocated quota, the server will automatically suspend the account to prevent excessive amounts of data transfer occurring and so large costs being associated with this. In the event of this happening, the limit will automatically reset on the 1st of the month, or alternatively you may consider upgrading your account in which case your monthly limit will immediately increase and so re-activate the account.
