On the 10th June at 8am, Nominet made available a new domain name format available. This allows for registration of shorter domain names directly under the .uk format without having to use co, .me or .org in front of it. We have as an example penguininternet.uk

This new domain type also carries a right of registration, that being if there is an existing .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, .net.uk, .plc.uk or .ltd.uk then the registration of the new .uk domain name will be reserved for the appropriate existing owner.

Full details on this domain type and the rights of registration are available on the Nominet website set up specifically for the launch of this new domain type: http://www.dotuklaunch.co.uk/

Our systems will automatically allow registration of a domain name that has no reserved rights on the launch date, however should you have a reserved right for the domain name then please contact us and we can process the order for you. For reserved rights, you have a period of 5 years to take up the registration of your reserved name, after which point the registration will be made available to anyone.
